The Boulevards Ride   From Port to Port

Tel-Aviv boulevards were started by accident. Achuzat Bait, the neighborhood that was the core of the city of Tel-Aviv was built on two sand dunes. When they flattened the area to prepare it for construction the narrow depression, or “wadi,” between the dunes was filled up with sand, and because of that, was regarded as unfit for construction. The empty strip then became Rothschild Boulevard, the first boulevard in Tel-Aviv. The urban plan, developed for the city in the mid-twenties, extended the first boulevard and created what is known today as the Boulevards Belt. This green strip cuts through the heart of the city and provides some great views of its inner parts. The Boulevards Belt serves as a unique bike trail, which is the main route of our ride across the city center. This ride enables us to follow the urban development of Tel-Aviv, and to get to know some of the cultural and historic attractions of the first Hebrew city.

Unlike other Mediterranean cities, Tel-Aviv wasn’t born from the coast; on the contrary, from the start it was built with its back to the sea. Some say that this is due to the fact that the founders of Tel-Aviv, mostly immigrants from Central Europe, were not accustomed to the proximity of the sea and felt it to be an alien and dangerous place. However, after the Jewish settlers understood the commercial value of the seaside, they overcome their fears, and Tel-Aviv finally reached the coastline. In 1999 the city completed the construction of a new long promenade stretching from the port of Tel-Aviv on the north all the way to Jaffa port on the south. This promenade also serves as a bike trail which is the main route of our serene twilight ride along the coast. This ride enables us to get a whole picture of the Tel-Aviv seaside, explore its main attractions and experience its unique atmosphere.
